We are proud to announce the official launch of our company!Originally a sole proprietorship founded by me, Leo Sarian, in 2014, the practice was incorporated in 2017 to become Mitosis Consulting (Mitosis) with the mission of helping our clients build marketing and sales engines that allow them to predictably grow their businesses. Unlike most other consultants who focus mainly on strategy, Mitosis also assists with execution and engages with our clients in fractional leadership roles to help grow their businesses.
A little background about myself: I’ve been a growth hacker, and marketing/sales professional for the vast majority of my career. Shortly after graduating from the UConn School of Business in 2006, I embarked on my first job as an outsourcing consultant for a major insurance company. Almost immediately I knew that the insurance industry was not for me, and after roughly a year I left to pursue my next journey.
I moved to San Francisco in 2009 to pursue my passion for gaming in the rapidly growing social- and mobile-gaming sector. I dedicated the next few years of my life to learning the gaming industry inside and out, studying game design and product management as well as the marketing side of the gaming industry. Unlike traditional games, social and mobile games had very low barriers of entry and didn’t require millions of dollars to develop and market, which paved the way for new game designers and developers focused on the casual-gamer demographic.
During the next few years, games I produced, designed, invested in, and growth-hacked (Plus Mafia, Hollywood Dreams, Girl’s Life, Wacky Pigs, Hamster Run, Planet Mogul, and more) were played by millions of unique users. During this period, I also held advisory roles ranging from business strategy to business development and sales, and launched a boutique social media-marketing company that developed custom social applications for brands.
After the social- and mobile-gaming space entered a state of maturity, I made a business decision to shift towards the booming marketing- and advertising-technology space. In 2014, Mitosis Consulting (unofficially) was born when I took on my first two clients: Clearcode, and six months later, Piwik PRO.
Clearcode is a software-development company with a subsidiary marketing-technology product business they founded called Piwik PRO, and I split the vast majority of my time focused on growing the two companies. The long-term goal of Clearcode was to shift from being a services organization to a product company. During my consulting engagement from 2014 to late 2017, I helped grow Clearcode from around 50 to over 100 employees, and Piwik PRO from a company of just 10 to over 50. We helped build out a more predictable demand-generation strategy for our core software-development-services business (Clearcode) and improved sales enablement, allowing us to grow our revenue and invest additional earnings into the product side of the business (Piwik PRO), which went on to raise a Series A Investment Round in March 2017 (see Clearcode and Piwik PRO case studies for more details) and is on track to IPO on one of the European exchanges in the near future.
At the end of 2017, I decided to scale down my engagement at Piwik PRO and Clearcode to officially focus on launching and growing Mitosis and help other digital agencies and service organizations to productize their businesses. In past four years, I’ve met and spoken to dozens of digital agencies and service organizations who, just like Clearcode, struggle with launching and growing their own products or reselling third-party solutions. Launching and growing a product business is significantly different from selling services. It requires a complete transformation of demand-generation, lead-nurturing, and sales-enablement strategies, as well as the development of new product-management and client-success skill sets and culture.
Given my past experience and track record of achieving successful service-to-product-business transformations, I strongly believe that it’s a challenge Mitosis can help agencies and service companies overcome. Obviously such a transformation takes time and has to be tackled in stages, with Mitosis acting as a vehicle to decrease our clients’ learning curve and allow them to facilitate this transformational process at much faster speed, with fewer mistakes and wasted resources.
One my personal inspirations for founding Mitosis was the birth of my son in October of 2017, which gave me the final push I needed to officially register Mitosis and begin building out my consulting practice. My goal is to recruit the best and brightest minds in sales and marketing, and luckily I’ve already worked with many such individuals over the span of my career whom I plan on recruiting to join our team.
One such individual is Chad Barker (see Team Section), who joined our team in December 2017 to help tackle the first set of challenging new projects we’ve taken on. Chad has worked at companies such as Google and Intel. He was, in fact, one of the cornerstones of getting the Google reseller program off the ground, and I’m excited to have such a brilliant and hardworking individual as a part of our consulting team. We’ve also added Michal Divgun, a remarkable student at CUNY Hunter College who’s studying economics, and who I’ve been personally coaching to learn the ropes in a junior consulting role.
